Knew they were playing, sure. But made no plans to watch it because I anticipated an easy, boring Tar Heels victory over the mustard-clad clan that absolutely reeked four days prior.
So how to explain ... this?
Yes, this is the same Maryland team that lost by 29 at Clemson on Tuesday. I think.
Some crazy developments in College Park yesterday:
How does Cliff Tucker score 22 points? Wasn't that the same guy who couldn't make a layup at Littlejohn?
How does Ty Lawson have more turnovers than assists? That hadn't happened all season.
How does Maryland win after facing a nine-point deficit with less than two minutes left?
How does Mr. Church League, Dave Neal, outmuscle Tyler Hansbrough for a key rebound and help shut down Hansbrough after halftime?
And how about this: 35 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists. Yup, a triple-double from Mr. Greivis Vasquez.
Patrick Stevens of The Washington Times says Gary Williams has the secret to beating Roy Williams. Remember last year's upset of the No. 1 Tar Heels in Chapel Hill?
Now if he can just figure out a way to beat Morgan State...
Mike Wise of The Washington Post has more on Gary's drama kings.
Suddenly, this week's visit from Duke becomes a lot more interesting for the Terps (17-9, 6-6 ACC).
On the North Carolina side, The Charlotte Observer writes about the Tar Heels' poor perimeter defense -- and not just Saturday.
(Vasquez) is the fourth guard to thrash the Tar Heels for 30 or more points this season, joining Wake Forest's Jeff Teague (34), Florida State's Toney Douglas (32) and Miami's Jack McClinton (35).
North Carolina is 2-2 in those contests (and in its other loss, Boston College guard Tyrese Rice scored 25).
“Greivis had a heck of a a game,” said shooting guard Wayne Ellington. “He made shots, got his team going. On the other hand, we were just flat out there. We were playing selfish, we weren't playing as a team.”
Wonder if Roy said one or two cuss words to his players after this one?
A quick standings update:
UNC 10-3
FSU 8-4
Clemson 7-4
Wake 7-4
Duke 7-4
BC 7-6
MD 6-6
VT 6-6
N.C. State 5-7
Miami 5-8
Virginia 3-9
GT 1-11
So let's see ... North Carolina's remaining schedule goes: Georgia Tech, at Virginia Tech, Duke.
If you're a Clemson fan right now, you're thinking: "How in the world did we lose those games to FSU and Virginia?"
Almost every team has a few games that it should've and could've won, so it all usually evens out. But still ... a 19-point second-half lead over the Seminoles at home. And that listless first half in Charlottesville. Ugh.
How about those Noles? I'd say Leonard Hamilton is the leader in the clubhouse for ACC coach of the year honors, with OP a close second.
Wow, Virginia Tech is on a serious fade. The Hokies have lost five of their last seven, and if this keeps up I don't want to hear Seth Greenberg complaining when his team gets left out of the NCAAs again.
If anything, Virginia Tech's AD should be complaining that Greenberg hasn't maximized his talent the last two years.
David Teel says don't count out the Hokies just yet.
Fantastic story here on K.C. Rivers from Paul Strelow of The State.
Also in The State, Ron Morris explores budget cuts at Clemson and USC.
How bad are things at Georgia Tech? Bad enough that a walk-on freshman guard is replacing Moe Miller in the starting lineup.
This is a dangerous game for the Tigers, who know from last week's upset at Virginia that a reeling team can be a tough out. But I suspect the Jackets are in the tank. I could easily be wrong. We'll see this afternoon.
The Greenville News writes about the perils of a trap game, and same story in the Independent-Mail.
The Post and Courier follows up on the Tanner Smith story.
In the Seneca paper, Will Vandervort writes about Chris Dwyer.
And I missed this story on Trey Delk that ran two days ago.
