LARRY WILLIAMS'

Breakfast and basketball

posted by LW, Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Feels weird to be setting the DVR for a 10 a.m. basketball game.

Trevor Booker admitted last week that he did a double-take when he looked at the schedule and saw that today's game at Liberty started two hours before noon.

Not to be a scrooge, but you do have to wonder how school presidents reconcile this when they mount stern opposition to a football playoff because of so-called academic concerns.

Guess priorities change when ESPN comes up with some catchy "24-hour tipoff marathon." Easy to look the other way when your pockets are being stuffed.

Did you know that St. Peter's and Monmouth tipped off at 6 a.m.? That's just ridiculous.

Scott Keepfer of The Greenville News has a preview of this morning's game.

Who sleeps less? Cris Ard or ESPN's Andy Katz?

Looks like the Chessmaster has quite the man-crush on Kyle Parker.

For those of you who are not familiar with his background, this is a superior athlete. And I would use his resume, not my opinion to back that up. That is during the spring of what should have been his senior year in high school he made all ACC in baseball. I think he might have led the conference in home runs while participating in spring practice and acclimating himself to being a college student instead of going to his senior prom.

He’s got the type of eye-to-hand coordination that would be associated with somebody who could hit a speeding fastball or moving curveball as well as he does; okay. That’s a critical factor. I think you find that most quarterbacks were really, really good and have a high accuracy number.

It’s not just about mechanics that you find that somewhere along the line they’re either a real good scorer in basketball, high school basketball, or a good hitter or a good pitcher. It’s something that’s high to hand coordination as much as physical athletic skills is a factor in performance.

So his resume clearly says that. And he was tremendously regarded quarterback coming out of high school. And there was - we were certainly well aware of his circumstances. And there was always some conjecture as to whether or not he would play college football or go directly into professional baseball. So he’s that type of athlete.

And early in the season, the skills were apparent, but clearly he was a player who hadn’t had to make those decisions under the speed of ACC competition, and now that he’s 10 games into the season, so, really doing a terrific job with it. They have some remarkable playmakers, and he’s very tuned into getting the ball to those playmakers. So those things work very well in consort.

He did everything but talk about how great Parker looks in a baseball uniform.

Did I say that?

In the Roanoke Times, the mysterious decline of Mikell Simpson.

Jerry Ratcliffe of the Charlottesville paper says C.J. Spiller is the real deal.

In The ACC Sports Journal, some insight into how North Carolina edged Duke for Harrison Barnes.

Duke-Carolina in basketball recruiting is becoming about like Duke-Carolina on the football field.

Uh-oh. Jacory Harris has a cast on his throwing hand. Not good, given that something like six quarterbacks transferred out during the offseason.

By now you've probably heard Clemson's game at South Carolina is at noon.

This is the best news involving a noon game Clemson has received in quite a while.

Williams-Brice Stadium will be significantly more benign at noon than, say, 7 p.m.

Then again, Clemson's last three games there have been at night and the Tigers have won all three -- including a 63-17 game in 2003 that some of you might remember.

Brad Scott talks about the offensive line's progress.

Paul Strelow of The State sizes up Spiller's Heisman hopes.

"He has a chance, but it's going to be very tough for him," ESPN writer Bruce Feldman said. "He's a dynamic player and is as explosive as anyone in the country, but is he going to get the chance to get everyone's attention?"

In the Independent-Mail, Thomas Austin assesses his chances of playing Saturday.

Finally, a reward for those of you -- both of you -- who have persevered through this meandering blog (photo courtesy of budding photoblogger Travis Sawchik):

Still in spirited negotiations with the wife in hopes of framing and placing on the living-room wall.
