Ready or not

It's times like this that make me wish we could hit the snooze button on basketball season.
Later today, I'll head to Raleigh for tomorrow's noon football game at N.C. State.
Later tonight, the basketball team will open its season at home against Presbyterian.
As I've said before, Oliver Purnell has made me look forward to basketball season with the job he's done. And that's quite a feat.
But it's times like this that make me wish it started a little later.
Not that anyone cares what a grubby sportswriter thinks.
Should be an interesting season for OP and the boys. Paul Strelow of The State has five questions facing the Tigers, and Greg Wallace of the Independent-Mail writes from yesterday's press conference previewing the opener.
Speaking of basketball, Duke is banking on its size up front making up for its glaring lack of athleticism in the backcourt.
And here's the big question about those big guys: Are they any good? Brian Zoubek and Lance Thomas were supposed to be all that, and ... uh ... no.

Virginia's two quarterbacks are listed as questionable for Saturday's game against Boston College.
Virginia coach Al Groh is listed as doubtful to be around in 2010.
That was a joke. Sort of.

N.C. State is hoping for an about-face similar to last year. Defensive tackle Leroy Burgess figures Clemson thinks it can come in and roll the Wolfies.
“They’re high on the mountain right now. They’re a little cocky, beating Miami and Florida State last week. They’re comfortable. I guess seeing our defense, they think they’re just going to come in and do their thing and run all over us. Just to go out there and prove to our critics that we can play football and we can stop people, that’s from our point of view.”
Looks like N.C. State is getting LB Ray Michel back.
Travis Sawchik of The Post and Courier poses an interesting question: What are the Tigers going to do without C.J. Spiller?
Some are looking ahead, wondering if Death Valley will become an offensive wasteland next season sans Clemson's electric Heisman hopeful.
Dabo Swinney is bracing for the prospect, noting C.J. Spiller, a player he calls a "program-changer," will be a ring of honor member unless he "robs a bank,"
"Only 19 more days with C.J.," said Swinney, calculating the rest of the regular season earlier this week. "What are we going to do?"
Bart Wright of the Greenville News says Spiller's decision to return for his senior year should pay off in the NFL.
Here's a story on Clemson's secondary, which has made a number of good quarterbacks look bad.
"We know which quarterbacks are better than others," DeAndre McDaniel said. "But we go in with the same mentality. We're about to make this quarterback feel bad."
So first we are told that Steve Spurrier hasn't been calling ball plays for, oh, two years now.
Now we have to deal with the revelation that Spurrier is ... Mr. Positive?
What has the galaxy come to?
