LARRY WILLIAMS'

Friday links

posted by LW, Friday, February 05, 2010

Sorry for the lateness of today's blog.

Spent the night (and some morning) traveling to the in-laws and am now watching a foot of snow fall outside their house.

Starting to wonder whether we'll make it back by baseball season.

Wasn't able to catch last night's basketball games, but looking at the results I'm just going to stop trying to figure out the ACC.

Duke is thoroughly outclassed at Georgetown and then thoroughly defeats Georgia Tech.

Maryland and Greivis Vasquez look pathetic in a loss at Clemson, then pretty good in a win at Florida State.

Looks like Vasquez had to deal with more than the Seminoles.

Greivis Vasquez, the Maryland point guard, had been serenaded with foul-mouthed taunts. About his mother. About his homeland. There was even a sign someone held up here at the Donald L. Tucker Center on Thursday night: "Deport Vasquez."

Yikes.

Here's Vasquez's take.

“The fans here were crazy, the craziest I’ve ever had since N.C. State,” Vasquez said. “They were being racist, they were talking about deporting me and sending me back home, calling me Mexican when I’m Venezuelan. It was pretty bad, so they deserved to lose. That’s why they lost. I showed up like I showed up, like I’m the best player on the court and they have to take it like that.”

Hard to believe North Carolina is 2-5 in the ACC after last night's loss at Virginia Tech.

Can't spell "North Carolina" without "NIT." Been a long time since that joke was dusted off, huh?

Andrew Miller of The Post and Courier presents his annual recruiting report card, and he says Clemson's depth tops South Carolina's splash.

While the Gamecocks might have made the bigger splash with the signing of Lattimore, Clemson won the overall recruiting battle between the two Palmetto state schools, according to Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell.

"Marcus Lattimore turned what was looking like a very mediocre class for South Carolina into a top-25 class," Farrell said. "One player can do that. One player with Marcus Lattimore's ability can change a lot of things. I think overall, Clemson had the better class. It was very close this year. In the past you've usually had a clear winner between the two schools, but this year it was very close. I just felt like Clemson had a little more depth to their class than South Carolina did."

Here are Miller's grades for the Tigers.

Willy Korn talks about his choice of Marshall in the Greenville News and Independent-Mail.

“One thing me and my dad have been talking about is just metaphorically breaking off the rear-view mirror and not looking at the past,” Korn said. “I could sit here for six hours and talk about, ‘If this happened, if this happened, it would have gone better.’ I’m trying to stay out of the past, stay right here in the present and get ready to go help that program.”

Best of luck to Korn in his future endeavors. He's a really nice guy and was always a pleasure to talk to.

And now for the real bombshell: Turns out the Men at Work song "Down Under" was a ripoff.
